The Smart Museum of Art is located on the north edge of the University of Chicago’s campus in the lovely and historic Hyde Park. We are located 7.5 miles south of the Loop, and easily accessible by car or by public transit.

By Car

Via Lake Shore Drive
Exit at 57th Street and turn right at the first stoplight on to Hyde Park Boulevard. Turn left at 55th Street and travel 1 mile west to Ellis Avenue. Turn left on Ellis. The Smart is on the left, set back from the street in the center of the block.

Via the Dan Ryan Expressway (90/94)
Exit at Garfield Boulevard, and travel east through Washington Park, bearing left on Rainey Drive and following the signs for University of Chicago Campus North. On the east end of the park, turn right onto 55th Street. Go east on 55th Street until you reach Ellis Avenue. Turn right on Ellis. The Smart is on the left, set back from the street in the center of the block.

The Smart Museum is only a short ride from the Lakefront Trail and Hyde Park has a network of recommended bike routes. Visit the City of Chicago’s website for a bikeways map and other bike-related resources.

A bike rack is located outside the Smart’s east gate. See the Office of Sustainability biking resource guide for additional information about bikes on campus.

Don’t own a bike? There are several Divvy bike sharing stations nearby.

Red or Green Line to Garfield Boulevard
Take the Red or Green Line to Garfield Boulevard. Exit and transfer to the eastbound #55 Garfield bus. Exit the bus at S Ellis Avenue and walk half a block south on Ellis. The Smart is on the left, set back from the street in the center of the block.

Jackson Park Express to 55th Street
Take the #6 Jackson Park Express bus to 55th Street. Transfer to the westbound #55 Garfield bus. Exit the bus at Ellis Avenue, cross to the south side of 55th Street, and continue south on Ellis for half a block. The Smart is on the left, set back from the street in the center of the block.

Other Options

Metra Electric to 57th Street
Take the Metra Electric District to the 55th-56th-57th Street station. Walk eight blocks west on 56th Street to Greenwood Avenue (or walk north to 55th Street and catch the westbound #55 Garfield bus, following the directions above). Turn right and walk north half a block. The Smart is on the left in the center of the block.
