Weimar Bodies is a small booklet that brings together artworks and other kinds of images to explore the range of popular ideas about the human body in Germany and to provide a sense of how the short-lived Weimar Republic (1919–1933) saw itself.
While German art in the 1920s is not unique in its representational qualities and meanings, it does exemplify a particular moment in which we can identify continuities and re-readings of the body in Western culture. Weimar citizens were left with questions about their new identity and place within the world, and they worked them out in fine art and popular visual representations.
