Workshop: Calling on the Archive

A small photo of a couple is set in a hand-painted frame with colorful flowers

Join the Smart Museum of Art for an exhibition tour and hands-on workshop that reflects on archival material inside and outside the galleries.

Led by Arnie Campa, UChicago second-year Art History major and Public Practice Intern, the workshop includes visits to the special exhibitions Calling on the Past: Selections from the Collection and not all realisms: photography, Africa, and the long 1960s and a discussion around material histories, nostalgia, representation, and the ways in which the past is in conversation with the present. After the tour, workshop participants will create a decorative glass frame for a photo from their own personal archive, inspired by the work of Malick Sidibé.

FREE, but advanced registration is required as space is limited. All skill levels welcome. Two sessions of the workshop will be offered at 12 pm and 1 pm. Frame and artmaking materials provided. Participants are invited to bring their own photograph (or e-mail the Smart a digital photo that we will print for them) to incorporate into the project.

This program is offered in conjunction with the University of Chicago's 2023 Alumni Weekend.
