Circuitous Matter: Living With Photography and Print Publications

A houndstooth pattern in orange, blue, and magenta

Virtual conversation

With the immediacy of an infinite scroll just at our fingertips, we don’t often consider the movement and life of print photography.

As the culminating program for the exhibition not all realisms, this conversation focuses on the ways in which photography circulated through books, magazines, and other archival ephemera during the post-colonial turn for South Africa, Ghana, and Mali. Panelists Antawan Byrd, Hilary Whitham Sanchez, Imani Roach, Stefanie C. Jason, and exhibition curator Leslie M. Wilson reflect upon these particular platforms for presentation and circulation, and ask how attuning to them helps us better understand the development of photography and the archive.

Together, this dynamic community of scholars and curators explore the ways in which printed matter shaped photography’s sharing, reproducibility, and reception through the sixties-era and beyond.
