Free and open to the public
The Smart is headed to Millennium Park for some summer fun!
For five days in August, we will head off site to share our unique style of family-friendly programming as part of the annual Family Fun Festival in Chicago's Millennium Park.
FREE, drop-in activities are open to all.
Monday, August 6, 10 am–2 pm
Fancy Flying Feet
Create fantastic flying feet by making wings for your sneakers and sandals! Using felt and colorful foam, we’ll teach you how to design wings that can be attached to your footwear that you can walk away with.
Tuesday, August 7, 10 am–2 pm
Draw Your Block
Work with participants in the Smart Museum/CHA Summer Teen Program to draw your home with sumi ink brushes on a long scroll, creating a collaborative city skyline. Also, construct a toy version of your house with our wooden blocks and create your own “home drawings” to take back to your place!
Wednesday, August 8, 10 am–2 pm
Funny Fountain Faces
Make a funny face! Build a Crown Fountain mask, make funny fountain face drawings, and get a pic in our “Fountain Photo Booth”!
Thursday, August 9, 10 am–2 pm
Tang Chang Calligraphy Kites
Make your own “Calligraphy Kites” to use during your day in the park! Based on the poem ink drawings by Thai artist Tang Chang (on view now at the Smart Museum) we will draw on rice paper and then fasten your drawings to wooden kite frames!
Friday, August 10, 10 am–2 pm
Flower Power
Inspired by the flowers in Kehinde Wiley’s painting on view in Expanding Narratives: The Figure and the Ground at the Smart Museum, as well as the lovely flowers in the Lurie Garden, we will learn how to paint flower power portraits, and make cool flower headdresses from silk flowers!
The Family Fun Festival is presented by the Millennium Park Foundation, with additional support by the Lloyd A. Fry Foundation.
