Tour: The Hardware Store and Arts + Public Life

November 19, 2025
3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Join us for a special tour of one of Theaster Gates' largest land-based sculptural projects, The Hardware Store, to see the ways in which Gates conceptually and formally engages with the ready-made through the preservation, stewardship, and activation of the material traces of bygone community landmarks and histories. Followed by a guided tour of the Arts Block, a vibrant collection of cultural and commercial spaces along Garfield Boulevard between Prairie Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive in Washington Park managed by Arts + Public Life (APL), originally founded by Theaster Gates in 2011. RSVP forthcoming.

Arts + Public Life (APL) at the University of Chicago is a neighborhood platform for arts and culture in Washington Park. Grounded in cultural stewardship and community partnership, APL provides residencies for local artists and creative entrepreneurs, arts education for youth, and artist-led programming and exhibitions. Launched in 2011, APL is part of UChicago Arts in the Division of the Arts & Humanities.

Please Note: Smart Partners get special early access to Theaster Gates programming. Want early access? Join the Smart today here.
