Free and open to the public
July 8, 2023
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Smart Museum of Art, The University of Chicago, 5550 S. Greenwood Avenue
Drop in and investigate how shapes and colors work together!
During this Family Day, create colorful and strange-shaped paintings out of wooden panels. Make your own wildly shaped 3D painted sculpture or collaborate with other kids to build with Magna-Tiles. The activities are all inspired by the Wooster-shaped paintings and vibrant colors presented in our summer exhibition, Ted Stamm: In Transit.
Plus, from 2–3 pm, join our partners from the Chicago Public Library for a Destination Discover Story Time featuring books all about shapes and colors.
FREE, drop-in. Art-making supplies and other materials are provided. Family programs are best for kids 4–12, but all ages are welcomed! Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Family Days at the Smart Museum are designed to celebrate the creative potential in all of us. With new projects every month, Family Days offer opportunities for kids and their caregivers to create together and connect with one another. Each program is unique, fun, and free, emphasizing invention, improvisation, and hands-on creativity.
Celebrate summer with Librarian Megan as she travels throughout Chicago and talks, sings, reads, writes, and plays with some of your favorite Chicago residents from Sue and Maximo at the Field Museum to Pilipili and his siblings at Lincoln Park Zoo. Destination Discovery Story Time allows Chicago Public Library users to visit cultural institutions in person or virtually from the comfort of your home or classroom.
