Born in New York City in 1934, Carl Sagan was an American astronomer, astrophysicist, and cosmologist. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in physics from the University of Chicago, and later obtained a Ph.D. in astronomy and astrophysics from the same institution. Sagan was a prolific author and television personality, known for his popular science books such as Cosmos and his work on NASA's Voyager and Mariner missions. Sagan was included in Exemplary because his rigorous inquiry and communication process align with the University of Chicago's interdisciplinary and socially-responsible intellectual tradition. Sagan's interdisciplinary approach to scientific inquiry, as demonstrated through his work on the Voyager spacecraft mission and Cosmos, makes him a fitting example of the University's values.
