Smart Fest: An Invitation

We spent our summer clearing out the whole museum.

The galleries were empty, and it was lonely in there for a while. We did this because it’s our 40th anniversary, and we had to make room for the first all-museum exhibition since our opening in 1974.

The exhibition, Carved, Cast, Crumpled: Sculpture All Ways, opens this weekend, and you’re invited to celebrate the opening with us at Smart Fest! This free, community open house will feature live music in GalleryX, festive snacks, and activities for all ages.

Since Carved, Cast, Crumpled is a sculpture-focused exhibition, there will be some sculpture-making opportunities at Smart Fest.

Test your chops carving a real block of marble, and participate in the Smart’s first “Carve-Off,” a competition between collaborative groups to carve blocks of foam into fine sculptures. Cast a medallion and make molds of your hands. Crumple paper into sculptures inspired by artist Tom Marioni’s installation Birds in Flight!
