Alison Gass has announced that she will step down from her position as Dana Feitler Director of the Smart Museum of Art, effective September 23, 2019.
Jill Sterrett, Deputy Director, Museum Affairs and Strategic Impact, will serve as Interim Director. Sterrett will work in close partnership with Michael Christiano, Deputy Director and Curator of Public Practice, and Issa Lampe, Deputy Director for Academic and Curatorial Affairs, to build on all that the Smart Museum has accomplished over the last two years—re-envisioning how a university art museum engages students and faculty through the Feilter Center for Academic Inquiry, making deeper connections to the culturally rich South Side of Chicago, and expanding the canon of work conventionally displayed in museums through dynamic exhibitions.
A search for Gass’s successor will begin later this fall.
