Conversation Pieces is a series that invites UChicago scholars and their surprise guests to enter into dialogue with artworks in The 50th: An Anniversary Exhibition. Associate Professor of African History, African Studies, and the College and Deputy Dean of the College for Research and Teaching Innovations, Dr. Emily Osborn leads the second installment of these in-gallery micro-talks about Kara Walker’s 1997 pop-up silhouette book, Freedom: A Fable.
Presented by the Feitler Center Faculty Advisory Committee.
Emily Lynn Osborn is a faculty member in the Department of History. Her scholarship focuses on Francophone West Africa. She also wears other hats: she is the Deputy Dean of the Office of Research and Teaching Innovation (ORTI) in the College, and faculty chair of the Smart Museum's Feitler Committee. One of Osborn’s great joys is the work she carries out directing and teaching in UChicago's Study Abroad CIV sequence in Senegal. That class gave her the occasion, this past January, 2023, to work with Urunna Anyanwu, with whom she will be presenting at this November program.
