Family Day: Cartography, Calligraphy, and Constitutions

A quill pen rests next to a a piece of paper with calligraphy writing that reads: My Constitution, 1) Ice cream all day, 2) Kids can vote, 3) Soccer every day!

Join us for the first in a series of "Create-a-Country" Family Days! Dream, vision, and build imaginary countries, designed by kids and inspired by ideas and artworks presented throughout the Smart Museum this spring.

A country, at its core, is a place, its people, and an idea. This Saturday, draw a map of your imagined nation and use colorful ink washes to fill it with lakes, mountains, roads, and cities. Then, try your hand at calligraphy, using calligraphy pens, quills, and ink brushes to write out the ways in which your country should work—a kid's constitution and bill of rights!

FREE, drop-in. Art-making supplies and other materials are provided. Family programs are best for kids 4–12, but all ages are welcomed! Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

About Family Days

Family Days at the Smart Museum are designed to celebrate the creative potential in all of us. With new projects every month, Family Days offer opportunities for kids and their caregivers to create together and connect with one another. Each program is unique, fun, and free, emphasizing invention, improvisation, and hands-on creativity.
