Voices of Value(s)

Three people gather around a game of dominos on a white sheet of paper

The Smart Museum of Art's summer teen intensive, co-produced with Chicago Housing Authority, invites you to an end-of-summer celebration at the Black Wall Street Journey gallery at Urban Juncture. The event will feature an opening reception for their exhibition, Voices of Value(s), that will be on view through early-September. Guests can also view in a live painting session with the teen participants and artist EDO, experience a curated sound atmosphere, play dominos and other games, enjoy light refreshments, and purchase t-shirts co-produced with Boxville vendor The Work Spot

FREE, drop-in.

Artwork and ideas have been informed by engagements with artists Rick Lowe, Pugs Atomz, EDO, Amber Ginsburg, and Theaster Gates’ studio; curators Laura Steward and Abby Winograd; visiting lectures provided by DreamWakers with Alorie Clark, Paris Premdas, Chris Beard, and Gambriel Wills; site visits to the Logan Center for the Arts, Arts Incubator, Museum of Contemporary Art, Stony Island Arts Bank, and Boxville; and an exploration of ceramicist Ruth Duckworth.

The 2022 Smart Art and Community Engagement program has been led by a teaching team of Morgan Sayers, Jo McEntee, and Jason Pallas with support from AmeriCorps VISTA interns Andrew Brandon and Jaden Roundtree and university interns Ella Trotter, Jessica Keane, and Kal Haile. Teen participants are Lakyla Banks, Amarie Cruz, Jahlyn Gaither, Heaven Graham, Dashawna Graham, Milan Jackson, Jasmine Joyner, Xavier Proctor, Shaniah Sanders, Jermel Smith, Janiyah Travis, Sy'aire Travis, and Amarie Cruz.
