Art-B-Q and Chicago Sound Show Opening Reception

Students line up for hot dogs in the sculpture garden

Join us for a back-to-school cookout, preview of the Art to Live With collection, and opening celebration for The Chicago Sound Show.

The art-filled garden party at the Smart Museum of Art features lawn games, creative art-making, great prizes, and free Chicago-style hot dogs, veggie and vegan fare, cake, and mocktails. UChicago students can learn more about the works of art available for loan through Art to Live With. Plus, the event also marks the opening of The Chicago Sound Show with artist talks and a scavenger hunt to find new pieces of sound art scattered across campus.

Art to Live With

The Smart Museum’s Art to Live With program offers UChicago students living in residence halls the unique opportunity to borrow original works of art to display in their dorm rooms.

In Autumn 2019, students will be able to select from more than 100 specially designated artworks in the Smart Museum’s Art to Live With collection, including new acquisitions proposed by our Student Advisory Committee. Works will be loaned at no cost for the duration of the academic year.

You can preview the artwork in advance by attending the Art-B-Q, viewing the pop-up exhibition, or liking your favorite pieces on the @art_to_live_with Instagram!

The Chicago Sound Show

This outdoor sound art exhibition presents site-specific works by nine Chicago artists that explore thresholds, passageways, and common spaces across the University of Chicago’s campus. Through use of “found sound,” meditative human voice, acoustic archaeology, and more, the works reveal and amplify the architectural peculiarities of the campus while enriching our sensual knowledge of space.
