Miriam’s Café at the Smart
Special notice: CAFE CLOSEd MARCH 15
Miriam’s Café at the Smart closed at the end of winter quarter, at the end of the day on March 15, 2019. The Museum will operate without a cafe for the foreseeable future.
During a recent routine health inspection, the City of Chicago’s Office of Public Health gave Miriam’s Café a passing grade, but with conditions that would require significant and highly disruptive infrastructure work to bring the café up to code and maintain operations. This would include running a water line to the cafe to install a functional sink at the counter—work that would require us to, among other things, demolish the terrazzo flooring along the line’s pathway. This is work that we are not currently prepared to do by the deadline issued by the City. The Smart Museum has therefore made the difficult decision to close the cafe.
The notice comes at a moment in which the Museum is making plans for long-overdue facilities upgrades, and the Smart will take the opportunity to explore how a re-envisioned cafe, done right and to code, might fit with a broader vision of creating a Museum lobby space that is flexible and welcoming for all.
