On Saturday, December 6, from 5 PM to 8 PM, you’re invited to join us for a one-time screening of a selection of moving-image works by our Founder and Executive Director Theaster Gates.
Throughout the screening, Gates will be joined by Allyson Nadia Field, Associate Professor of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago, in conversation exploring how craft, the archive, the architecture of gathering, and poetics of spaces are represented in Gates’ filmic practice. Two key films in Gates’ oeuvre, once screened, will be followed by a critical examination of their themes, techniques and the role that film plays in Gates’ practice: Public Notice (2019) and the durational documentary film project Black Artists Retreat: Reflections on 10 Years of Convening (2023).
This program is presented at Rebuild’s new home, The Land School (7200 S. Dorchester Avenue), in partnership with the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago on the occasion of their current exhibition, Theaster Gates: Unto Thee.
