Family Day: Making Monuments

Drop by and join in the Smart’s free family activities every month! Each Family Day features hands-on art activities designed to inspire children to think about and respond creatively to art and the world around them.

This Saturday, guest artist Jeremiah Hulsebos-Spofford leads a monumental Family Day. What if you designed and built your own public sculpture or monument? What would it look like? What would it say? Who would it commemorate?

FREE, all materials provided. Activities best for kids ages 4–12, accompanied by an adult.

Family programs are supported by the Harper Court Arts Council.

About the artist

Jeremiah Hulsebos-Spofford is a visual artist and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Contemporary Practices at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work has been shown at the American Academy of Arts and Letters, The UCSD Art Gallery, The Glass Curtain Gallery and The Hyde Park Art Center, among other spaces. He is co-director of The Floating Museum, a collaborative arts organization that creates temporary, site-responsive museum spaces, including River Assembly, a floating gallery that celebrated the history of the Chicago River and offered a speculative monument to Chicago’s first non-Native American settler, Jean Baptiste Point du Sable.
