Internships

University of Chicago students gain direct experience in museum work through year- and summer-long internships in a variety of departments of the Smart Museum, including curatorial, registrarial, education, public relations/marketing, and business offices. Requirements for internship positions vary by departments; all positions are paid and require approximately 10-19 hours of work each week. Interns are typically hired in the fall for one-year renewable positions. Please visit our Employment Opportunities page to find out about open positions, application procedures, and requirements.

Docents

University of Chicago undergraduate and graduate students from a wide range of academic departments form the Museum's docent team. They serve as educators for K-12 students, and lead lively discussions with family, community, and adult groups. Docents gain valuable teaching and public speaking experience and develop a deep understanding of art and museums. Prior knowledge in art or art history, while welcome, is not required; we seek students who demonstrate leadership skills and who have some experience working with children.

Gallery and Café Attendants

Paid Gallery and Café Attendant positions are available to University of Chicago students during the year. Gallery Attendants not only play the crucial role of protecting the Museum's artworks and upholding gallery guidelines, but they also serve as the Smart's visitor services staff, orienting patrons in the Museum, answering their questions, and assisting them during their visit to the Smart. University of Chicago students also staff the popular Smart Café, which has become a regular stop for many students and faculty during the week, and a respite for patrons who visit our galleries. Visit our Employment Opportunities page for information on open positions.
