Class Visits
Self-guided class visits to the Smart are welcome. Because school programs or other tours might be scheduled to take place in the galleries you wish to visit, please contact the Education department to schedule and coordinate your session, 773-702-4540 or smart-education@uchicago.edu.
Works rotate periodically. Please visit the Museum a day or two prior to your visit, or check with Education or Curatorial staff to confirm that particular objects are on view in the galleries.
Guided visits by Museum staff or student docents are also available. Please also schedule guided visits with the Education department, 773-834-1066 or smart-education@uchicago.edu.
View works in the collection in the Education Study Room. Objects that are not currently on view in the galleries can be used for teaching in our Education Study Room, which accommodates 15 to 20 students. To study specific works or to choose artworks for use in the Study Room, please contact Curatorial Assistant Jessica Moss at 773.702.3258 or jsmoss@uchicago.edu.
Artworks can also be chosen by consulting the collection database at http://smartmuseum.uchicago.edu/collection/database.shtml.
- Please make your reservations at least two weeks in advance. We will try to accommodate groups that schedule classes with only a week's notice, but we cannot guarantee access to the Education Study Room or objects from storage. Requests made less than one week in advance cannot be accommodated.
- Lists of objects for use in the Education Study Room must be provided at least one week in advance. No more than 15 works may be pulled per visit. Certain artworks may not be available for use due to the size, the complexity of installation, or the condition of the object. Any objects not available for inclusion in the class session will be communicated back to the requesting faculty member.
- If students are expected to return to see object(s) for a class assignment, such as a paper, instructors may set no more than two four-hour time slots for viewing.
- A projector can be provided on request for classes requiring AV support, however, instructors must bring their own laptops and any necessary cables.
