Accessing the collection

The Smart Museum's study room provides public access to our collection of paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and photographs.

The room is available, by appointment, to individuals and groups including University of Chicago classes as well as independent scholars, students, and other school groups. A member of the Smart Museum's staff will be available at all times of the visit and will handle the artworks.

Access

The study room is open by appointment Tuesday through Friday, from 10 am to 5 pm. During the school year, it is also open until 8 pm on Thursday. (Other visit times may be considered on an individual basis.)

Booking

Appointments must be made at least two weeks in advance, and lists of objects must be given at least one week in advance. In case of cancelations or rescheduling please give 24 hours notice.

Choosing objects

The Smart Museum is home to a wide range of works, with notable collections of Asian art, European art, modern art and design, and contemporary art. Generally 10 to 15 objects can be brought out for view at one time, depending on their size.

Rules and regulations

  • No pens are allowed in the study room. Pencils only please. Pencils can be borrowed from the front desk if necessary.
  • No food or drink is allowed. This includes bottles of water.
  • No bags or coats (except for laptops and small purses). Larger items can be left at the front desk.
