Vessels of Meaning: Modern British Ceramics

14 December 1993–6 March 1994

Breaking down traditional distinctions between art and industry, modern British potters have looked for inspiration in trends and styles as diverse as Sung Dynasty vessels, Japanese glazing techniques, and hand-building concepts. The correlation of studio ceramics and fine art movements such as Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art has generated substantial interest in the manufacture and collection of British pottery in the last 10 years. The exhibition includes more than 25 pieces from artists Alison Britton, Ewen Henderson, Walter Keeler, and Janice Tchalenko, part of a gift from P.N. Barnes¬—the London Gallery, never before put on display. These pieces explore the wide range of techniques and materials used in modern studio ceramics.

The exhibition was made possible by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council
