Auguste Rodin’s monumental sculpture, The Burghers of Calais, is the final result of multiple studies also done in bronze, 18 of which are now in the Cantor, Fitzgerald Collection in Beverly Hills, California. these objects, which are accompanied by descriptive photographs, detail how Rodin was able to design and construct his finished sculpture. The small bronze studies in the exhibition include hands, faces, nude figures, as well as a final model for the entire composition, each of which provides insight into Rodin’s method for achieving emotional expression, fluent gestures and figural interconnectivity.
