The exhibition centered around the substantial holdings of Chinese art at the University of Chicago. The collection which originated during the first decade of the University’s existence, was augmented by the gift of Professor and Mrs. Herrlee Creel of Chinese bronze-age objects. The study collection grew further when Father Harrie A. Vanderstappen, Professor in the Department of Art and of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, proposed the acquisition of a solid study collection of Ming and Qing paintings from the collection of Victoria Contag, author of the standard reference on the subject of artists’ and collectors’ seals.
