Prints of Barnett Newman

26 March–11 May 1986

Barnett Newman is best known for his large, monochromatic paintings but began to make prints after the death of his brother. His prints evoke a sense of spirituality through color and composition while presenting the duality that runs throughout all of his work, the juxtaposition of rough and smooth, spontaneous and calculated, sensual and cerebral. This exhibition consisted of 43 lithographs, etchings, and aquatints by Barnett Newman, which demonstrate his mastery as a printmaker and reveal the subtlety that characterizes his work in general. his The exhibition was organized by the University Gallery at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in cooperation with the Barnett Newman Foundation.

The exhibition was funded in part by the Illinois Arts Council.
