Print Exhibition: Zeami, Masakasu Yamazaki, Mitsuru Ishii

21–27 October 1988

Zeami, a play by Masakazu Yamazaki, is about the life story of legendary 15th century Japanese theater actor, Noh, who possessed great command of the stage and usually found himself at the center of court intrigue. The play was first presented in 1955 where it won the Kishida Award for Modern Plays. To mark its 30th anniversary, it was restaged for presentation in Tokyo and a subsequent Midwest American tour which included Milwaukee and St. Paul in addition to Mandel Hall at the University of Chicago. The costumes and set designs for the revival were created by Mitsuru Ishii, whose original drawings and designs were displayed at the Smart Museum.
