Print Exhibition: La Caricature and the French July Monarchy

15 May–30 June 1987

La Caricature, a journal founded by Charles Philipon emerged on November 4, 1830 in response to the freedom of the press promised by King Louis-Philippe and the July Monarchy. Philipon recognized the value of caricature in conveying his political views and he chose the medium of lithography, invented as recently as 1798, for its spontaneity of execution, and ease of dissemination as well as the benefits of huge press runs. He gathered together a group of notable artists including Daumier, Gavarni, Monnier, Granville, and Travies de Villiers who revolutionized French caricature. The exhibition features prints by these and other lithographers.
