3 December 1991–8 March 1992
Joseph P. Shure, an alumnus of the University of Chicago, actively collected works of painting, sculpture, prints, and drawings from a wide range of artists from the early twentieth century northern Expressionists like Emil Nolde to contemporary American figures such as Jack Beal and Alex Katz. This exhibition of a selection from his collection focuses on the portrait print, and explores the transformations undergone by the genre of portraiture as it emerged in the graphic media. The collection is rich in prints by Beckmann, Corinth, Dine, Nolde, Pearlstein, Villon, and others.
Curator: Dennis Adrian, a Chicago critic and art historian, as well as a University of Chicago alumnus, and collector of fine arts.
The exhibition was funded in part by the Illinois Arts Council.
