Jean Metzinger in Retrospect

23 January–9 March 1986

Jean Metzinger was primarily known for co-authoring the first treatise on Cubism, De Cubisme, published with Albert Gleizes, in 1912. This exhibition, featuring more than 50 paintings and drawings, is the first to examine Metzinger’s development as a Cubist rather than merely focusing on his work in the treatise. The exhibition spans Metzinger’s Neo-Impressionist early work circa 1900 through his 1920s post-Cubist paintings. This exhibition, curated by Joann Moser, will be shown first at the University of Iowa Museum of Art, followed by the Archer M. Huntington Art Gallery at the University of Texas at Austin. After its presentation at the Smart Museum, it will travel to the Museum of Art at the Carnegie Institute.

Curator: Joann Moser, Director, University of Iowa Museum of Art

The exhibition was made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Illinois Arts Council, and is co-sponsored by The French Cultural Services, Chicago.
