Jean Dubuffet: 40 Years of His Art

4 October–2 December 1984

Jean Dubuffet, one of the pre-eminent post-war European artists, is associated with an artistic style that includes highly textured canvases, expressive figures, and a loose technique notably drawn from artworks by children and the insane. This exhibition at the Smart Museum was organized to coincide with the unveiling of a monumental Dubuffet statue outside the Chicago State of Illinois Building. The exhibition features over 50 paintings, drawings, and sculptures that span the past 40 years of Dubuffet’s career. The exhibition was co-sponsored by the Smart Museum and the Washington University Gallery of Art, St. Louis.

Curator: Richard A. Born, Curator of the Galleries

The exhibition was funded in part by the Smart Family Foundation Fund and the Illinois Arts Council
