23 October–14 December 1980
Edward A. Maser, Director of the Smart Museum and Professor in the Department of Art at the University of Chicago, is an expert on the German and Austrian Baroque periods. The exhibition Drawings by Johann Michael Rottmayr is the result of his continued study of that painter and his contemporaries. Maser was the first to publish on this extraordinary collection of signed drawings, which are the property of a private collection in Bergamo, Italy. He persuaded the owners, who wish to remain anonymous, to allow fifty of the eighty-two drawings in their collection, no part of which has ever been displayed, to travel first to Salzburg and then to the Smart Museum on the 250th anniversary of the artist’s death.
Curator and Catalogue: Edward A. Maser, Director of the Smart Museum and Professor in the Department of Art, University of Chicago.
The exhibition was made possible in part by funding from the Woods Charitable Trust, the Harold T. Martin Trust, and the Smart Family Foundation.
