Cross Sections: Recent Additions to the Collection

9 October–7 December 1986

Over the past two years, 21 donors have given or loaned over 300 works ranging from the classical to the contemporary. On display in this exhibition of a selection of those gifts were oil and watercolor paintings, lithographs, engravings, etchings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, and decorative arts by 35 artists including Albert Besnard, Lovis Corinth, Joan Miró, Aaron Siskind, Wayne Thiebaud, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Ed Paschke, Jim Nutt, and Winslow Homer. Four large, hand-colored Currier and Ives lithographs from the “Life on the Mississippi” series were on display, as well as Bauhaus furniture by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer, and Gertrude Waehner-Schmidt. The 1986 annual gift from the Friends of the Smart Gallery, Henri-Michel Chapu’s bronze sculpture “Joan of Arc at Domremy,” was displayed along with the group’s 1975 gift, “Man of Iron,” a modernist portrait of labor leader John L. Lewis. A rare self-portrait of Jean Metzinger, a pioneering Cubist artist who was featured in a Smart Gallery show last year, was part of this exhibit as well.
