Harold Rosenberg, art critic, author, and philosopher, published in many magazines, most notably the New Yorker during his long career. He also served as a University of Chicago professor in the Department of Art and on the Committee on Social Thought. In this exhibition of thirty Abstract Expressionist paintings and drawings, each work is accompanied by a quotation from Rosenberg, who devoted most of his career to the appreciation and criticism of that movement. The works in the exhibition came to the Smart from private collections and museums in the Chicago area. Such artists as Jackson Pollock, Willem De Kooning, Arshile Gorky, Mark Rothko, Philip Guston, William Boxiotes, Barnett Newman, Franz Kline, Adolph Gottlieb, and Joan Mitchell are included.
