Free and open to the public
Avant-garde trumpeter Jaimie Branch performs at the Smart as part of the Hyde Park Jazz Festival, a weekend of free performances at cultural venues throughout the neighborhood.
A mainstay of the Chicago jazz scene and a recent addition to New York’s, Jaimie Branch is an avant-garde trumpeter, whose playing “is redolent of Don Cherry but bolstered by her own suite of extended techniques; it drifts from tuneless clouds to long, coagulated tones” (New York Times). She also works as a composer and producer, as well as a sideman for the likes of William Parker, Matana Roberts, TV on the Radio, and Spoon. She released her debut album as a leader, Fly or Die, in May of this year. In addition to Jaimie on trumpet, it features Tomeka Reid on cello, Jason Ajemian on bass, and Chad Taylor on drums.
