Project Overview
In this project, students explored how modern and contemporary photographers, painters
and other artists use the poses and gestures of figures, and how they layer images,
objects and words to convey ideas and to persuade viewers. As a point of departure, students became acquainted with one of Walt Kuhn's early 20th-century metaphoric portraits of a showgirl and with several of Cindy Sherman's later 20th-century identity self-portrait photos. Using digital or disposable cameras and image
manipulating software, students created a series of staged self-portraits to retell or
reconstruct American history. Using the tools and methods of contemporary artists, students
related stories passed down within their families from generation to generation or to
juxtaposed contemporary images with traditional historical accounts. Students also
explored alternative bookmaking techniques and constructed non-traditional albums/books
featuring their photos to effectively tell their own stories of American history.

Project Overview
In this project students examined how identity shapes American art and literature
through a series of art-integrated lessons/units woven into this American Literature
course. The objectives for this project were to help students develop comprehension and
analytical skills, use details from text/work to support facts, defend interpretations
and opinions, improve written and verbal communication skills, and to make connections
across and within disciplines and to personal experience. The general goals and activities
are outlined within each unit.
