The companion to the Smart Museum of Art's exhibition of the same name, this book is a stimulating introduction to and exploration of the intersections between food and art, from the art of the meal—both in its preparation and in its presentation—to the performative aspects of eating and the social and political role of food.
The book will provide overviews of artists’ works and critical essays on avant-garde feasts; philosophers; the influence of food on contemporary Southeast Asian art; and Gordon Matta-Clark’s famous experimental restaurant, Food, among other subjects.
Much as feasting itself crystallizes any number of social, creative, and critical practices, Feast will encompass history, anthropology, global art criticism, and philosophy to discuss how politics, aesthetics, and hospitality coalesce around the experience of the shared meal.
